Shamanic Healing

Shamanic healing is an ancient practice to restore balance and harmony within the body, mind, and soul. It aims to address deep-rooted imbalances by focusing on the spiritual root cause of sickness, reconnecting you to your personal power, and helping heal spiritual or energetic wounds. By working with the unseen world of spirit, nature, and energy, shamanic healing can and aims to be profoundly transformational, to support your journey toward wholeness.

Practical Details

Each session takes 2-3 hours and is unique – guided by your needs and the wisdom of spirit. However, the structure of the session remains the same, including:

  • A consultation section – sharing your story, current challenges or blockages to set an intention for the healing.
  • Shamanic technique section – through a controlled trance I will commune with the spirit world, connecting my guides, your ancestors, employing shamanic healing techniques as guided.
  • Debrief section – finally we’ll discuss the healing and round up the session together, sharing any rituals you may be invited to do following your session

Your Questions Answered

In 2024 I completed a 3-year practitioner training with Second Sight Healing, a full initiatory training in the ancient art of shamanism, rooted in ceremony, ritual and practice of shamanic healing technique.

We worked around a ‘medicine wheel’ and the elements that sit in each cardinal direction. In doing so, being intimately introduced to the land in which the teaching took place – a fundamental and crucial aspect of the work at Second Sight. This significant focus placed on connecting to the land and the invisible powers residing there is at the heart of my practice as a shamanic practitioner, and I am early on this path. This relationship building is built through the the language of offerings and participating in authentic shamanic ceremonies, as learned in my training.

Another crucial aspect of the training was the profound work connecting with my ancestors, and begin the process of cleansing intergenerational trauma that has been passed down through my lineage. A personal highlight for me was travelling to Ireland to complete an ancestral pilgrimage. With  Irish lineage on the paternal side of my family, I walked 200 miles, with my tent, food and essentials all on my back, giving offerings in all the towns and cities my ancestors were born, praying to the land, giving thanks and learning about my personal history. As I have learned from Second Sight, a meaningful shamanic revival in the modern world requires the support of our ancestors. Because of this, ancestral veneration is a vital part of my practice.

Once these foundational elements were in place, I began my third year of training, focusing on the practice of shamanic healing. This included cross-cultural techniques such as ancestral healing, working with the dead, spirit extraction to remove poisons, transference of power, cleansing with feathers, healing through song, and soul retrieval, along with other lesser-known methods.

The course delves into the root causes of sickness in the modern world and how shamanic practices can facilitate healing. With the guidance of spirit and the foundation of the first two years’ initiations, I gained hands-on experience in applying these teachings, while deepening a reciprocal connection with the land.

In my current practice, I work closely with the land where I live in Cawsand, Cornwall, engaging in offerings and shamanic ceremonies to maintain this relationship. This ongoing work forms the foundation of my practice.

Read more below about the roots of shamanism, the lineages I draw from, and how my training and ancestral healing shape my approach. You can also read more about my experience on the About page, where I share about my professional experience and how this has supported me in offering the work I do now – it’s all connected!

Shamanism is an ancient spiritual practice that predates organised religion and spans cultures worldwide. It is rooted in animism, which is the understanding that everything is alive and possesses a spirit, an intelligence, an aliveness. In animistic traditions, every tree, river, mountain, animal, and even the winds carry a spirit. Human ideas, sicknesses, and emotions are also understood to have a spirit.

Shamans serve as intermediaries between the physical and spiritual realms, restoring balance when the harmony of life is disrupted. By journeying (in a trance state) into non-ordinary realities, they seek guidance, retrieve lost power, and heal the soul, addressing the spiritual root causes of illness or imbalance. These practices rest within animism, as shamans communicate with the spirits of nature, ancestors, and guides to bring healing and wisdom.

Indigenous shamanic practices have existed for tens of thousands of years, from Siberia to the Amazon, from the Wixárika people of Mexico to the Sámi of Scandinavia. While rituals, tools, and traditions differ across cultures, the core principles of honouring the spirits of the land, maintaining balance, and fostering reciprocity are universal.

I studied shamanism and shamanic practices with Second Sight Healing in the UK, a practical training course grounded in deep respect for the land we reside in and the renewal of a reciprocal relationship with it. Second Sight holds a rare collaboration with the Wixárika Nation, who reside in the Sierra Madre of north-central Mexico. The Wixárika have long safeguarded their traditions from outsiders, but for reasons, they have chosen to share their sacred knowledge with others. This relationship and collaboration is rooted in deep respect, recognising that our indigenous brothers and sisters are keeping the world alive. Although they comprise less than 5% of the world’s population, indigenous peoples protect 80% of global biodiversity (a fact I read in Nemonte Nenquimo’s memoir, We Will Not Be Saved).

You can read more about the relationship with the Wixárika Nation on the Second Sight Healing website.

Through my training with Second Sight, my personal shamanic practice is grounded in a spiritual lineage that is working to renew shamanic traditions here in the UK. This is a multi-generational process, and it would not be possible without the teachings and collaboration of the Wixárika marakames and community through Second Sight.

To honour the roots of shamanism is to embrace its animistic worldview, recognising the sacredness of all life and the interconnected web of existence. It involves acknowledging the contributions of indigenous communities who have safeguarded this knowledge for millennia and practising with humility, reciprocity, respect, and responsibility. Shamanism is more than a set of techniques, it is a way of life that invites us to listen deeply to the land we reside in, honour and feed the spirits, and live in harmony with the sacred balance of the modern world.

Lineages and Influences

The spiritual and cultural influences that shape my practice reflect a broad, syncretic lineage, drawing on my ancestral traditions and the traditions that have contributed to Second Sight’s teachings, passed down to initiates (students).

Second Sight honour these roots as part of a seven-directional altar system that is worked with throughout the training, forming the container for the work. Below lists four of these directions, of which acknowledge the diverse streams of wisdom that inform their work, and now mine.

  • East: The inspiration from the Wixárika people of Mexico, the desert, and Hikuri (peyote), where the first seeds of the training were planted. We honour indigenous traditions and the fire that continues to inspire and guide the work.
  • South: The Hellenistic traditions, which have profoundly influenced our understanding of astrology and divination. These traditions carry echoes of the animistic roots of Western civilisation, where communion with spirits, deities, and celestial forces was an integral part of life. The Roman conquests also introduced gods and spiritual practices from the Near East and North Africa to these lands, shaping the syncretic traditions that emerged.
  • West: The Celtic and Norse traditions, honouring the gods and spirits venerated on these lands for centuries. These traditions maintain a deep connection to nature, storytelling, and the cycles of life, death, and rebirth.
  • North: The most ancient ones, those buried in the land, whose names and stories have been lost to time. These are the earliest animistic peoples of these lands, whose spirits still linger in the stones, rivers, and trees. The traditions of my own ancestors rest in the North.

This lineage is not static but ever-evolving, continuing the syncretic traditions of the past while being firmly rooted in the present.

My own ancestral lineages span the UK, East Prussia, the Baltic region, and Ireland – lands rich in magic, healing, and shamanic traditions. From the Baltic and Prussian kriviai and vaidilutės, who tended sacred fires and communed with nature spirits, to the Irish bean feasa and draoi, who worked with herbs, charms, and the land’s deep wisdom, these traditions share a reverence for the unseen. Each of these cultures held strong animistic beliefs, honouring the spirits of land, water, and ancestors through divination, healing rites, and offerings. These traditions, though fragmented by time and within my history, live on through ancestral memory, calling me to weave their wisdom into my own practice today.

My connection to healing work is also deeply personal. My late father was a healer, and it was through this path that he met my mother, when he healed a javelin injury in her knee. This inheritance, combined with my training, weaves together a tapestry of ancient wisdom and lived experience, guiding my practice in service to both the spirits and the land.

Shamanic healing can help with a wide range of practical, everyday challenges as well as deeper spiritual issues. You might consider a session if you’re:

  • Feeling stuck in life or weighed down by persistent “bad luck.”
  • Struggling to let go of a past relationship or emotional attachment.
  • Seeking support as you navigate grief, loss, or major life changes.
  • Experiencing feelings of emptiness, lack of direction, or disconnection
  • Battling recurring negative patterns, habits, or self-sabotaging behaviours.

  • Yearning for a deeper connection to yourself, your intuition, and the natural world, land around you

Shamanic healing may not help. It may not be the right time in your journey, you may need it combined with other things (like medical support, therapy or herbal medicnes etc). It’s good to know that it is not assured.

It can however:

  • Help release emotional or energetic blockages.
  • Restore feelings of balance, grounding, and clarity.
  • Reconnect you with your inner strength and life purpose.
  • Heal spiritual wounds and reclaim lost power.
  • Deepen your connection with yourself, others, and the natural world
  • This is up to spirit though and nothing is guaranteed
  • It’s not a cure all, placing this much power in something may infact do the opposite for you

I understand that life can be unpredictable, and sometimes plans need to change. However, to ensure fairness and respect for both our time:

  • Cancellations or Rescheduling: You may cancel or reschedule your shamnic healing appointment up to 48 hours before your session without any charge.

1. Psychopomp: Guiding Souls to Rest

Psychopomp is the shamanic practice of helping souls that are lost or stuck in the in-between world to cross over into the light or to find peace. These souls may have become trapped due to trauma, unfinished business, or untimely death, and their presence can create a disturbance in the energy of the living. A psychopomp journey involves working with the spirit world to guide these souls to their rightful resting place, helping them to move on and find peace.

I enter a trance state—often with the help of the drum or other rhythmic tools—and travel to the spirit realm to communicate with the soul. Through compassion and guidance, I help them find their way to the other side, allowing for healing and closure. This process can bring peace to both the soul that has passed and the living people who are still impacted by the loss.

2. Soul Retrieval: Reclaiming Lost Parts of the Self

Soul retrieval aims to reclaiming parts of the soul that have been lost or fragmented due to trauma, major life challenges, or emotional wounds etc. When we experience distressing or overwhelming events, parts of our soul can “leave” as a way of protecting us from the pain. Over time, these lost pieces can create a sense of disconnection, emptiness, or lack of vitality.

Soul retrieval involves bringing back these lost parts to the person, helping to reintegrate these parts. This process can bring a sense of wholeness, vitality, and renewed personal power.

3. Extraction: Releasing Negative Energies or Entities

Extraction is the shamanic technique used to remove intrusions from a person’s energy field. These energies can manifest as physical illness, emotional distress, or a general sense of being “weighed down.” Intrusions can be caused by trauma, stress, or other people’s energy, and very commonly from our own internalised negative beliefs and thought patterns.

The Healing Process: Integration

After any of these techniques—whether psychopomp, soul retrieval, or extraction—the integration of healing is essential. In the case of soul retrieval, for example, the person may need time and space to fully integrate the parts of the soul that have been returned. This might involve additional support, such as grounding practices, journaling, or meditation. Or just being really nice to yourself!

Healing is a personal journey, and the number of sessions depends on your individual needs, spirit and intentions. For some, a single session brings significant transformation. Others find ongoing sessions helpful for deeper healing or maintaining balance over time. Together, with spirit, we can decide what feels right for you.

Mentoring can be an more suitable alternative over medium to long term

While both shamanic healing and therapy aim to support your healing, they are not the same thing. Here are a few differences:

  • Focus of the Work: Therapy often focuses on exploring your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours through conversation and self-reflection, perhaps using frameworks or models, depending upon your therapist and their training. It works within the conscious mind and may incorporate psychological tools to help you understand and process experiences.
  • Shamanic healing, on the other hand, works with the spiritual and energetic layers of your being. It aims to clear blockages, release stagnant energy, and restore balance at a soul level. It works on the invisible level.
  • Techniques Used: A therapy session typically involves dialogue, analysis, and structured techniques based on psychological theories. In a shamanic healing, the practitioner may use spiritual techniques such as energy clearing, soul retrieval, psychopomp, extraction, journeying to spirit realms, or using tools like drums, rattles, and feathers to shift energy. These practices are experiential and involve subtle realms beyond the conscious mind, working within a the framework of an elemental medicine wheel (fire, water, air, earth) (See shamanic healing techniques below)
  • The Role of the Practitioner: A therapist may guide you in understanding and working through your inner world using a collaborative, conversational approach. A shamanic healer acts as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, holding sacred space and facilitating the release of energies that no longer serves you. The shaman is not solving problems for you but helping you reclaim balance and power on an invisible level, so that your healing may continue in forming new habit patterns when you leave the session.
  • Experiential Nature: Therapy focuses on cognitive processes and often involves linear exploration of your story. Shamanic healing is deeply experiential, involving sensations, imagery, and connection with spirit guides or archetypal energies. It works beyond words to access and heal the root of issues in ways that can feel transformative and profound.
  • Both therapy and shamanic healing can work beautifully together, complementing each other for holistic well-being, in addition to other approaches too. There are many ways to experience profound healing.

Shamanic healing is built upon a deep respect for the individual, their journey, and the spiritual realms. Ethical guidelines include:

  • Confidentiality: Everything shared in a session is treated with confidentiality, creating a safe and trusting environment for healing.
  • Informed Consent: Clients are always informed about the techniques used and their potential effects. You are given the space to ask questions and make empowered decisions regarding your healing process.
  • Boundaries: Clear boundaries are maintained to ensure the healing process is respectful, safe, and consensual.
  • Respectful Guidance: The healing process is not about controlling or directing a person’s path but supporting them in their own self-discovery and healing journey.
  • Respect for the Client’s Autonomy: Client’s right to make decisions regarding their own healing journey is honoured and upheld. This includes supporting clients in making choices without judgment or pressure.
  • Cultural Sensitivity and Respect: Awareness and respect is centred surrounding cultural and spiritual traditions client’s work within, ensuring respect, avoiding appropriation or misrepresentation of sacred practices and folding in existing practices where requested or appropriate for a client (as requested)
  • Gender Inclusivity and Respect: I live and work with a respect for all gender identities, expressions, and experiences. I am committed to providing gender-affirming care, which means creating a safe, affirming, and inclusive space for individuals of all genders. This includes respecting and supporting each person’s gender identity, using their chosen name and pronouns, and ensuring that my healing work is sensitive to the unique needs and experiences of each client, free from discrimination or assumptions.
  • Racial Equity: I am dedicated to creating an inclusive environment that recognises and respects the diverse racial and cultural backgrounds of each individual who comes for a healing. • Non-judgment:  Experiences, emotions, or personal choices are not judged or weighed. The process is about healing and understanding, not about moralising or imposing personal beliefs.
  • Sacredness of the Work: Shamanic healing involves working with powerful spiritual energies. This work is carried out with reverence, humility, and respect, treating the sacredness of the process with the utmost seriousness (and humour where needed!)
  • Self-awareness and Ongoing Personal Growth: As a healer I continuously work on my own healing and personal growth. I work with an awareness of my own emotional and energetic state, ensuring I am grounded and balanced before conducting healing work.
  • Clarity of Role: My role in the healing process is clearly stated, ensuring that a client understands what I can and cannot offer, and the limits of my abilities, that of spirit and a shamanic healing.
  • Accountability: I take responsibility for their actions and words, I am open to feedback from clients post healing (this is emailed)

Supervision and Support:

As a shamanic practitioner, I believe in the importance of ongoing personal and professional development. While there is no official oversight body, I engage in regular mentorship with experienced practitioners. This support helps me stay grounded and continue to grow as a practitioner.

Continual Learning and Accountability:

I am committed to ongoing education and training in shamanic healing. This includes attending workshops, participating in ceremonies, and working with respected elders and teachers within the shamanic community. This continual learning process ensures that I stay connected to the core practices of shamanism, while integrating contemporary approaches that support the healing of modern-day challenges. Of course I work very closely with the land in which I live.

Since shamanic healing does not have formal certification or regulatory oversight, I hold myself accountable through the ethical principles mentioned above, along with mentorship and peer support. In addition to this, clients have the option to contact the Second Sight Healing School, where I received my training, for any questions or concerns regarding my practice. They can provide guidance, support, and address any ethical concerns that may arise during or after a session.

If, at any point, a client feels unsafe or has serious concerns regarding the healing process, they are also encouraged to report their worries to the appropriate authorities, such as local law enforcement. While this is an extremely rare and last-resort measure, it ensures that clients have an avenue for external support if needed.

For your peace of mind, I am fully insured, and I can provide my insurance details upon request. This coverage ensures that both you and I are protected in the rare event of any complications or misunderstandings during a session.

These options ensure that my practice remains transparent, respectful, and in alignment with ethical standards, providing clients with the assurance that their well-being is my top priority. If at any time a client feels uncertain or uncomfortable with any aspect of the healing process, they are always welcome to reach out directly to me for clarification or further discussion.

*Healing happens in partnership with spirit. It is spirit working through me during healings / readings - in collaboration. Worth keeping that in mind!
